Ha! My mother was forced out of South Carolina as a 10 year old for not saying the M-word at the country store after buying penny candy. She said thank you and omitted the M-word. The good ole boys followed her home and stepped onto my great grandfather's porch, threatened him. They said if he knew what was good for him, they'd get her out of town immediately. My grandmother and mom left on the midnight train to the city of brotherly love. My mother hated the south and never returned. I wrote about it in one of my stories. Needless to say, I hate the word too, for very different reasons.
