I think this is the biggest reason. People are too attuned to external factors rather than self care and their own mental landscape until it all becomes too much to bear. Employers are not too sympathetic either which probably fuels the hesitancy to admit a breakdown in their mental sphere. I've seen managers try to fast track an employee's exit when they admit they have a mental issue. It's a bit of a conundrum.
