I wouldn't have a problem with someone wanting to discuss their past. It's the quickest way to get to know someone at their core. You'll come away knowing how they think, react to certain situations, and most importantly how they handle pain.

By the end of the conversation, you'll know if you want to get more involved. To me, that's a win/win.
