I've never thought about this interesting topic, but I can see how if one is ill prepared it can cost lives. Television glamorizes everything and folks think reality TV is real. It's scripted like everything else.

I'd imagine it would take quite a while to be really prepared for living off the grid, like learning a entirely new set of living skills.
